8th century Abbot of Ripon, North Yorkshire
Tatberht was an eighth centuryAnglo-Saxon saint ,abbot [ 1] and contemporary ofBede .[ 2]
He is known to history through the writing ofBede , theSecgan Hagiography ,Stephen of Ripon ,Hugh Candidus andByrhtferth .
The western façade ofRipon Cathedral Tatberht was appointed the secondAbbot ofRipon , in accord with the terms of thewill [ 1] of the Abbeys founderWilfrid ,[ 3] who was notable for arguing theRoman position at theSynod of Whitby .
A relative of his predecessor Wilfred,[ 4] with whom he worked closely,[ 5] Tatberht, was named in Wilfrid's will as joint heir withSaint Acca the patron of Bede.[ 6] Tatberht andAcca commissionedStephen of Ripon [ 7] to write alife of Wilfrid .[ 8] [ 9] [ 10] [ 1]
According toHugh Candidus andByrhtferth he is buried atRipon ,[ 11] along with SaintsWilfrid , ’Albert’,Botwine andSicgred and ’Wildegel’, while there is evidence he was re-interred inPeterborough Abbey .[ 12] and he is commemorated on 5 June.
