Tannerella forsythia is ananaerobic,Gram-negative bacterial species of theBacteroidota phylum. It has been implicated inperiodontal diseases and is a member of thered complex ofperiodontal pathogens.[1]T. forsythia was previously namedBacteroides forsythus andTannerella forsythensis.[2][3][4][5]
Tannerella forsythia was discovered by and named after Anne Tanner, who works atThe Forsyth Institute located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[6]
T. forsythia has been identified in atherosclerotic lesions. Lee et al. found that infecting mice withT. forsythia induced foam cell formation and accelerated the formation of atherosclerotic lesions.[7] It has also been isolated from women withbacterial vaginosis.[8] The presence of oralT. forsythia has been found to be associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer.[9]
