Tanishaa Mukerji (born 3 March 1978),[1] knownmononymously asTanishaa, is an Indian actress known for her works inHindi films. A member of theMukherjee-Samarth family, daughter of filmmakerShomu Mukherjee and actressTanuja, and the younger sister of actressKajol. She made her debut with theslasher filmSssshhh... in 2003 and had her first success with thepoliticalcrime thriller filmSarkar, and its sequelSarkar Raj in which she had a supporting role.[2] This was followed by a career declined, In 2013, she made her television debut as a contestant inColors TV's reality showBigg Boss 7, where she finished as 1st runner-up.

Early life and family

Mukerji was born inMumbai on 3 March 1978, into the family ofShomu Mukherjee, aBengali Hindu film director and hisMarathi wife, veteran actressTanuja, and is the younger sister of Bollywood actressKajol.[3] She was in a relationship with herBigg Boss 7 housemate,Armaan Kohli for a year before they broke up in October 2014.[4]

Career

Debut with commercial failures & career declined (2003–2008)

She got her first break inBollywood with the thriller slasher film,Sssshhh... oppositeKaran Nath andDino Morea. It received poor reviewsTaran Adarsh fromBollywood Hungama called, "Sssshhh? a weak screenplay with excessive length and most importantly, a half-baked climax" and wrote, "Mukerji needs to work on her dialogue delivery along with screen appearance". The film was a critical and commercial failure.[5][6] Her next release theromantic comedy filmPopcorn Khao! Mast Ho Jao (2004) received negative reviews from critics, upon its premiere and performed poorly at the box office.[7] In 2005, she starred in theromantic comedy filmNeal 'n' Nikki co-starringUday Chopra under the banner ofYash Raj Films. The film was released on 9 December 2005 to highly negative reviews from critics and emerged as a commercial failure at the box office.[8][9] A reviewer wrote, "Neal 'n' Nikki concentrates more on skin show than a sound story terrible letdown in terms of content".

The same year, she appeared in a supporting role of Avantika in thepoliticalcrime thriller filmSarkar alongside anensemble cast. The film released on 1 July 2005, with positive reviews and became commercially successful. Her last release in 2005 was thewar filmTango Charlie oppositeBobby Deol. This was her consecutive 4th box office failure. After two years gap in 2007, she made herTamil film debut with theromantic musical filmUnnale Unnale, oppositeVinay Rai. The film was successful at the box office with received positive reviews for its storyline and the performances and got her a nomination at Vijay Awards for Best Debut Female. In 2008, she was seen in the comedy filmOne Two Three oppositeUpen Patel. This too had an unsuccessful run at the box office. The same year, she reprised her role in the second installment ofSarkar film series,Sarkar Raj. The sequel also became critical and commercial success.[10]She is now awaiting the release of her mystery filmSecond Chance alongside Arjan Bajwa, Myra Saree and Ilulia Vantur.

Bigg Boss and further work (2013–present)

She made her comeback by participating in the television reality showBigg Boss 7 and became the 1st runner-up.[11][12] She was later seen as one of the judges in the stand-up comedy showGangs of Haseepur.[13] In 2016, she participated inFear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 7 and became a finalist. She participated as a contestant onSony TV's dance reality showJhalak Dikhhla Jaa 11 where she finished in 13th place.
