Tammy Blanchard (born December 14, 1976) is an American actress. She rose to prominence for her role as teenageJudy Garland in the critically acclaimed television filmLife with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001), for which she received aGolden Globe Award nomination and aPrimetime Emmy Award. Her other notable film roles were inThe Good Shepherd (2006),Sybil (2007),Into the Woods (2014) andThe Invitation (2015).

Blanchard has been nominated for twoTony Awards: one for her role asLouise in the 2003 Broadway revival of the musicalGypsy, and the other as Hedy LaRue in the 2011 Broadway revival of the musicalHow to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Early years

Blanchard was born inBayonne, New Jersey, and she attended Mary J. Donohoe School andBayonne High School.[1]

Career

She made her professional acting debut on thesoap operaGuiding Light in 1997, where she played spoiled rich girl Drew Jacobs.[2] Her first scene was withTaye Diggs, who briefly played a record producer on the show. The character of Drew became more prominent over the years, and by the time of her departure in 2000, had become an audience favorite.

Soon after leavingGL, Blanchard was cast as the younger version ofJudy Davis'sJudy Garland in the 2001 ABC television docudramaLife with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows.[3][4] She received glowing reviews for her performance[5] and earned anEmmy Award forOutstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie.[6]

She played Marianne Mulvaney in the Lifetime television filmWe Were the Mulvaneys (2002), and was noted for her "fragile strength" byThe New York Times reviewer.[7] In 2004, she played Sally Reid in the CBS made-for-television filmWhen Angels Come to Town, withPeter Falk.[citation needed]

Blanchard earned aTony Award nomination and a Theatre World Award for her work in herBroadway debut in the 2003 revival of the musicalGypsy, in which she played the title role oppositeBernadette Peters.[8][9][10]

Blanchard's film roles includeThe Good Shepherd (2006), starring as the deaf lover ofMatt Damon's character;[11]Bella (2006),[12] which took the top prize at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival; andThe Ramen Girl (2008)[13] andDeadline (2009), both working withBrittany Murphy. She co-starred withJessica Lange in theCBS television remake of the 1976 television filmSybil, in which she portrays a woman withdissociative identity disorder (DID).[14][15] In 2008, she appeared in the multi-star cast of the television docudramaLiving Proof as the first woman to have been treated with the breast cancer drug Herceptin.[16]

In 2010, Blanchard played Amy Roberts, the widow of a murderer, in the made-for-television filmAmish Grace, which first aired on theLifetime Movie Network. The movie is based on theWest Nickel Mines School shooting.The Huffington Post noted that "This is an amazing young actress and she deserves to get better and better roles."[17][18][19] TheHollywood Reporter noted that Blanchard gives "a moving turn".[20] The same year, she appeared in the filmRabbit Hole, alongsideNicole Kidman andAaron Eckhart, as Kidman's sister.[21]

Blanchard played the role of "office bombshell Hedy La Rue" in the Broadway revival ofHow to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which opened on March 27, 2011, and closed on May 20, 2012.[22] For this role, Blanchard received her second Tony Award nomination forBest Featured Actress in a Musical.[23]

Blanchard starred in the filmUnion Square, co-written and directed by theSundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Award Winner,Nancy Savoca, which premiered at theToronto International Film Festival in 2011, and was screened in New York City in July 2012.[24][25] In 2014, Blanchard appeared as Florinda in directorRob Marshall's film,Into the Woods, an adaptation of the popular stagemusical. In 2015, she portrayed Eden inKaryn Kusama's thriller filmThe Invitation,[26][27] and in 2016, she appeared in the filmTallulah, which debuted on Netflix.[28]

She appeared in the Broadway production ofThe Iceman Cometh as Cora, which started on March 23, 2018,[29][30] and she played Audrey in the Off Broadway revival ofLittle Shop of Horrors, which opened at theWestside Theatre on October 17, 2019.[31] For this performance, she received aDrama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Musical, and aGrammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.[32][33]

Personal life

Blanchard lives in her hometown of Bayonne, New Jersey. She has a daughter.[1]
