In the2006 state assembly elections Jagannath Mitra ofCPI won the 203 Tamluk assembly seat defeating his nearest rival Chittaranjan Maiti ofTrinamool Congress. Contests in most years involved multiple candidates but only winners and runners-up are being mentioned. Nirbed Roy of Trinamool Congress defeatedSantosh Rana of CPI in 2001. Anil Mudi ofCongress defeated Surajit Bagchi of CPI in 1996 and 1991. Surajit Bagchi of CPI defeated Anil Mudi of Congress in 1987. Biswanath Mukherjee of CPI defeated Sukumar Das representingICS in 1982 and representing Congress in 1977.[5]
Ajoy Mukherjee representingIndian National Congress won in 1972, representingBangla Congress won in 1971, 1969 and 1967, and earlier representing Congress won in1962,1957 and inindependent India's first election in 1951.[6]
