.tk 10% GDP claim

[edit]

This claim seems to originate from Joost Zuurbier, the entrepreneur who originally managed the .tk TLD and was intimately involved with its operation. According to the article[1] MIT which is cited in this page already, that GDP claim is disputed by Tokelauan officials73.203.44.14 (talk)19:12, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

History in WWII?

[edit]

What happened in WWII? Or did it somehow ignore Tokelau and the Tokelauans? --Oneiros (talk)17:26, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

GDP

[edit]

All the GDP numbers seem to be nominal at current prices, NOT at Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) nor adjusted for inflation. I get this from reading the reference including the Excel file downloadable from that reference. I plan to revise the infobox to eliminate mention of PPP, etc. If you disagree, please explain how you got that from the source cited or from some other source. Native :: overseas

[edit]

The current version of this article makes two claims that are apparently contradicting :

"45% of its residents had been born overseas, mostly in Samoa or New Zealand."This formulation suggests nearly half of the population are non-natives, which is likely to be understood as non-indigenous by any general reader.

" Approximately 94% of the population speak Tokelauan as their first language."This suggests nearly all residents are indigenous. Tokelauan is not your *first* language, if you have moved in from NZ or Samoa.

Both claims could be true only if mothers of 45% people choose to give birth in NZ hospitals - in which case it is irrelevant information creating unwanted misunderstanding - or if parents of this proportion of people reside(d) long term overseas, but were natives of Tokelau, in which case "though to Tokelauan parents".

I find it more likely, that an error occurred here and perhaps the second claim should read:"Of the remaining 55% that are indigenous 94% speak Tokelauan as their 1st lg."

I don't have any figures for you, but it is clear fromTokelauans that the majority of the ethnic group live in New Zealand, and are concentrated in some areas of NZ. I would think it likely that many continue to use their native language at home, maintain close ties with their homeland, and support their family back in Tokelau financially ('remittances' - seeTokelau#Economic overview). I don't see a contradiction in the two statements you highlight. This is a common situation forPasifika New Zealanders and probably also for Pasifika in other countries.
There appears to be a contradiction in the Demographics section of the article: it says 44.9% of the population were born overseas in 2015, then in the next paragraph it says a quarter were born overseas (2006). This stems from data being taken from two different censuses, and the 2016 census explains this; see page 24 "Birthplace" ofthe 2016 census "Looking at the 2006, 2011, and 2016 Censuses we see the proportion of residents born overseas continues to increase."-Gadfium (talk)01:58, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I also don't see a contradiction in the mentioned statements. The census you link to mentions a number of ways to count the population, but in the metadata a symbolic point in that the Tokelau National Statistics Office is itself based in Samoa. Given how small the total resident population is, small absolute shifts can have a large impact on the percentages (a whole fifth of the "usually resident population" were not in Tokelau for the census, for example).CMD (talk)04:57, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
