OMON legacy

[edit]

Still at it. Antyufeyev's henchmen carried out terrorist acts (killing people) in Transnistria (Piedņestrā) which Smirnov then blamed on Moldova and used to enforce martial law. Thought it was worth mentioning.PētersV20:24, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that lenghtly description of their actions outside of Latvia and in connection with other events would be irrelevant. Rather you could write article on them or add this toOMON. It could only say that it is unlikely that they'll be tried because they went to another country, also that should go in responsibility not legacy section ~~Xil...sist!14:37, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

I suggest moving this article to 'The Barricades (Latvia)' or some version thereof. The article name does not have to be a direct translation of the Latvian name (if that indeed is what it is) and I think calling it simply The Barricades is too vague. A barricade can be erected anywhere at anytime and does not in itself refer to what happened in Latvia in January 1991. Thoughts?Endrū Hejs (talk)04:41, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The naming rules require usingmost common name and it is not used anywhere, so there is no need for disambiguation ~~Xil(talk)17:31, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
But surely the most common name would always include some qualifier to indicate where the barricades took place?— Precedingunsigned comment added by58.111.88.5 (talk)10:52, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
When I made this article I initially named it something else for this reason, but I later realized that it is almost universally called this and even though there are historical events involving building of barricades none of them was called Barricades, so I decided was over-thinking it and moved it long time ago and indeed nobody has had an issue with it until now - apparently it being proper noun, use ofthe and plural is enough not to cause confusion and further specifying would only suggest that there were other events with such name ~~Xil(talk)13:43, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There is no way that the expression "The Barricades" in English with no qualifier, is ever going to refer to this event unambiguously.Endrū Hejs (talk)23:21, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
People look for things under their common names, which is why articles are not named as precisely as possible, there is no naming conflict here either and even if somebody happens upon this looking for something else there are links on top of article suggesting where to look for it ~~Xil(talk)00:57, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I still think I have a valid point, but I'm happy to concede to you.Endrū Hejs (talk)03:04, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's not that the point is not valid :) it's that I think there are valid reasons not to do it. ~~Xil(talk)13:21, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
