NFL Films video of the game-winning kick

[edit]

I removed a sentence describing O'Brien's field goal as portrayed in the NFL Films video summary of Super Bowl V. In that video, a low angle slow motion shot of O'Brien's kick is shown, and there is no audio with the exception of a simulated "kick" sound. This is not actually film of the game winning field goal! Rather, this is film of O'Brien's extra point following the Tom Nowatzke touchdown earlier in the 4th quarter. The giveaway here is that in the shot in question, all of the players are clearly in the sunlight and the kick is much less than 32 yards, whereas in shots from other angles of the actual field goal, the players are in the shadows of the Orange Bowl.

I do not know why NFL Films decided to pass off the extra point as the game winning field goal in this fashion. Perhaps there was no single NFL Films camera that captured the field goal with the clarity and precision with which the extra point had been captured.

This is a fascinating observation! I too was long bothered by how short that "field goal" seemed. Looking again at the end-of-game montage from the Super Bowl I-X Collector's Set DVD, it is now obvious that scenes in shadow are interspersed with scenes in sun. This is yet another example of the deceptive editing that I have noticed in many other NFL Films Super Bowl films. I added a discussion of this to the WikipediaNFL Films article, but it was removed as "Original Research" (you can still see it in previous versions, however).65tosspowertrap12:39, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In the DVD collection mentioned above, in the segment on Jim O'Brien (at the 4:20 to 4:25 mark), they show the winning kick framed through the back of the goal posts with the ball coming toward the viewer. However, since it doesn't match the close-up "fill up the frame" style of the other footage they had, plus the ball wasn't always kept in the frame, I suspect that's why it wasn't used.RomeoMike (talk)21:04, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Over time, some snippets of TV footage of the 4th quarter have become available. This clip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIT0kT3hBk4) has multiple angles of Jim O'Brien's game winning kick -- my favorite is the one at 3:10.RomeoMike (talk)21:30, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As sloppy as it was, it was an incredible game; the turnovers made it very unpredictable and exciting, and the hitting was hard and violent. Defenses got away with so much more back then. Those were the golden years.—Precedingunsigned comment added by169.253.4.21 (talk)21:25, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How many seconds were left?

[edit]

"It was finally settled with nine seconds left when Colts rookie kicker Jim O'Brien kicked a 32-yard field goal with 5 seconds left in the game" ... What?Statalyzer (talk)21:47, 23 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Chuck Howley Fumble Recovery???

[edit]

I challenge anyone out there to provide conclusive evidence that Chuck Howley recovered a fumble in this game. There is a reference to this on various websites but I do believe that this is incorrect. Witness the Super Bowl V play-by-play on the USA Today website:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/nfl/super/superbowl-v-plays.htm

The only Cowboys who recovered fumbles in the game were Cliff Harris (1st quarter), Jethro Pugh (2nd quarter) and Richmond Flowers (3rd quarter opening kickoff). Also, Ed Hinton's 4th quarter fumbled rolled out of the endzone resulting in a touchback and possession for Dallas. There is no mention of a fumble recovery by Howley.

Witness also NFL.com's recap of Super Bowl V, which mentions Howley's two interceptions but makes no mention of a fumble recovery:

http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/history/recap/sbv

I believe there may be some confusion with Howley's performance in Super Bowl VI, when he DID recover a fumble and make an interception.

Unless someone can point to conclusive evidence that Howley recovered a fumble in Super Bowl V, I will be removing this reference.JohnnyThrowback (talk)18:30, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
