what?

[edit]

I have a hard time figuring out what the heck this article is talking about, that is different from existing technologies related to message passing, remote procedure call, object brokers and distributed computing, etc. What the heck is a "running instance of... a procotol"? The first paragraph with the definition doesn't adequately describe what is being discussed here. Is it a framework for discussing existing concepts, or a new set of concepts? The latter seems hard to believe - everything described in the first section (identities, proxies, interfaces, types, etc.) have existed for decades. How is this formalism any different? What purpose does it serve? If this is really something new, maybe some examples would be good, before getting into the esoterics of the definition. "Thus, for example, behavior characteristic to atomic multicast might be exhibited by instances of distributed protocols such as virtual synchrony or Paxos." Indeed. Was this just lifted from someone's thesis?Tim Bird (talk)21:32, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
