Pre-1588 Canonizations added

[edit]

I added the few dozen saints listedhere. The information in this source may conflict with information in the saints' articles. This source includes canonization date, saint name, date of death, and the canonizing pope.davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail)03:35, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge discussion

[edit]

I am proposing to mergeList of saints by pope with this article. They both are duplicate of each other. --Jayarathina (talk)16:43, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yup. (Although, honestly, while this is a better article, I thinkthat one has a better namespace. I'm usually all for brevity, but this one is rather unclear as to the subject.) — LlywelynII17:11, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
An attempt to proceed with the merge was reverted by the apparent owner of this page, who prefers inline links to citations aa well as inaccurate information.Mannanan51 (talk)18:57, 12 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • SupportJoeHebda's solution below. I think that would be the best route to take. Avoids the duplication of lists "by _____" and avoids huge tables. (If there's a way to make tables collapsible, that would be a good thing to add so readers can shrink tables they know they're not interested in; I'm not sure if that's actually an option, though.)Jujutsuan (Please notify with {{re}}talk |contribs)17:33, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A sortable wikitable?

[edit]

For many months, I was updatingList of Catholic saints with information fromList of canonizations since it appears to be the most complete.I do like the wikitable format withinList of saints by pope

In addition, there are these individual canonization lists:

Stepping back and looking at "the big picture", for the average Wikipedia reader, what might be easiest and complete would be an article/list witha sortable (all columns) Wikitable like this:

| Saint name | Birth date | Death date | Pope canonized by | Canonization date |

To prevent the table from becoming HUGE, it might be broken apart by century likeList of Popes for example.JoeHebda • (talk)13:45, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@JoeHebda: you did a lot of work on this, I think your wikitable idea is good. –BoBoMisiu (talk)22:38, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Mockup of sortable wikitable

[edit]

While I am no expert for coding wikitables, I did "clone" some ofList of saints canonized by Pope Paul VI, the first few of the 21 saints that he canonized.

No.SaintBirth dateDeath dateCanonized byDate of Canonization
1.Charles Lwanga and 21 Companions1860 or 18653 June 1886Pope Paul VI18 October 1964

4.Maria Soledad2 December 182611 October 1887Pope Paul VI25 January 1970

* Discussion: – If there is another or better way of setting this up, I invite any and all editors to change above with any improvements needed. Cheers!JoeHebda • (talk)18:43, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@JoeHebda: the "Saint" and "Birth date" fields is not sorting correctly in your mockup. I'm guessingor in "Birth date" is confusing the algorithm.

4.Maria Soledad2 December 182611 October 1887Pope Paul VI25 January 1970
I added:
  • {{dts}}s as a fix in the above version of your mockup.{{dts}} does not fix the sort if only added to one date, e.g. 1860.
  • data-sort-value="last name, first name"| (seeWP:TABLESORT for other options) to sort by last name.
  • class="unsortable"| so the "No." field is not sortable. I think the "No." field will be troublesome since each value is hard coded – adding a missing saint into the table between two previously added saints will require inserting a new number.

ThanksBoBoMisiu for the table updates. Sure looks like a lot more wikicode, wish there was an easier way. Regards,JoeHebda • (talk)17:17, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Example from beginning

[edit]

Hey all, in light of the merge dicussions, I started a table from the beginning.

Some notes: When dates were unknown, I left them blank. If saints were called "blabla of someplace" I had the table sort by their given name rather than the place. I also included a notes column since it looks like some of the other articles to be merged in included some notes. Thoughts? It'd be great if several people could contribute. Is there some way we'd like to split the table? Centuries were proposed. If others could contribute that'd be great. We could either start building the table in the article or build it here and move it over. Thoughts?Ajpolino (talk)02:15, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

* Recommend – To help "get the job done" I think we should simplify this wikitable with less columns. Then the list will be more consistent with these two:

If the reader needs more information from the list there is the wikilink to that person's article. Regards,JoeHebda • (talk)17:17, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

* Redirect this article to comprehensiveList of saints so there is one central place to maintain.JoeHebda • (talk)17:28, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
