I would not know any reason tonot supply the place of birth, as many encyclopedias do as a standard. In this case it would be also the only indication in the infobox of where the person lived, with a historic name of the country at the time. --GA
I wouldn't seriously object to any of these (in contrast, I thought "Occupation: Composer" was really unhelpful). On the other hand, Nikkimaria has just removed the whole thing, which also works for me. Regards,Opus33 (talk)23:35, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I notice the infobox I added has now been removed without discussion. I apologise that I had originally added it without discussion, but there was no hidden text (as withMichael Haydn) warning me of the previous general discussions about composer infoboxes, and I was unaware of the need to make a proposal on the talk page perWikipedia:WikiProject_Composers#Biographical_infoboxes.
I think you missed that everything had gone when I wrote the above. I now moved the box by Masato.harada up, and this is what I'd suggest (pic smaller only here, - suggesting upright=0.8 for the article). --Gerda Arendt (talk)10:28, 25 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, apologies. My point is for the infobox but kept short. If there’s an article on his father, I am not necessarily against including him, although not on his mother and his wife.
I have no problems with discussions, rather the opposite (see below). It stopped edit-warring, and I guess it would do the same here as well. You could also revert your revert, stopping it right now ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk)05:35, 27 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would support an infobox on the basis of an improved mobile experience.More than half the page views for this article are from mobile platforms, and an infobox lets the reader find the basic information with minimal scrolling up and down. And if viewed from the WP mobile app, I think the infobox is generally converted to a drop down menu.merlinVtwelve (talk)07:07, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer the more detailed infobox, but either is preferable to the article lacking one. The long arguments against composers having infoboxes has always seemed incredibly silly. We're at a place where most major biographies on Wikipedia are "supposed" to have infoboxes, it's a default expectation, an unofficial standard. Whenever you see a Biography without it, my default reaction is I think it's a stub.AvRand (talk)01:39, 27 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A reader who is genuinely interested in Haydn will probably skip over the infobox and read the main body of the article. So it's worth asking: what is the purpose of the IB, and who is it for?
I would suggest that it's there to meet the needs of people who aren't particularly interested in Haydn (or even classical music as a whole). For example, it might be a high school student who has been asked to write something about Haydn – or to 'choose a composer' for an essay. Or perhaps a person who has seen a reference to Haydn's name on social media.
So (for certain readers) an attractive and informative IB can serve as a kind of 'advertisement' for Haydn, and the reader is then (hopefully) encouraged to look more deeply into the main body of the article.
For these reasons, I would favour a longer, more detailed style of IB. I agree that "Occupation: composer" is unhelpful, but place of birth and death, certainly. And spouse/parents/relatives etc. Even the signature. It's in the hand that wrote all those musical notes, so perhaps it can help bring Haydn to life in the mind of the reader.merlinVtwelve (talk)09:10, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Without further discussion, perhaps you can find a better place for his handwriting in the article than the infobox, more in context I mean. --Gerda Arendt (talk)09:20, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You can visit what is said to be Haydn's birth home in Rohrau today. However, as Jones and other point out, the building has been thoroughly rebuilt to serve its purpose as a museum, and doesn't give a clear notion of the ruralness of Haydn's background. In particular, the original house had a thatched roof and attached work area, and was situated on a dirt road. So I've replaced the image with an artist's rendering from 1825, which is probably more realistic. This may (or may not) be the image that the dying Beethoven looked at in 1827, exclaiming "just look at the little house, and such a great man was born in it."
