Language about Ford and Burroughs

[edit]

If one checks Floyd Clymer's Henry's Wonderful Model T, one will find that the car Ford gifted Burroughs was a 1913 touring car. I propose to add this information.

In addition, the line that this car wasone of the first in the Hudson Valley is problematic to say the least. Although I do not have access to records, I would imagine that there were hundreds if not thousands of cars registered in the Hudson valley by 1913, especially in Albany. By the end of 1915, over a million automobiles had been manufactured in America!—Precedingunsigned comment added by32.176.181.244 (talk)17:44, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Burroughs and Natural Selection

[edit]

The article's statement about Burroughs's views on natural selection ("as well as commenting on natural-science controversies of the day such as the relatively new theory of natural selection with which he disagreed") would seem to be at odds with his writings.

For example, in his book "Field and Study" he wrote "Nature never fails to perfect her device. Natural selection attends to that." (p33) and also: "Endless variation, with natural selection working sleeplessly, bring about the new and higher types in animal life." (p310)

Those do not sound like the comments of someone who "disagreed" with the theory of natural selection. There is a more complex comment about natural selection themes in the "Leaf and Tendril" essay "Gay Plumes and Dull", but nothing which can be cited as evidence that he disagreed with the theory.

Indeed, in the "Leaf and Tendril" essay "Animal and Plant Intelligence" at one point (p172) he comments "Natural selection steps in and preserves the most hardy."

I would therefore suggest that the essay's claim (which apparently was based on 1922 New York Times article) be investigated and (if necessary) revised.42.241.0.186 (talk)09:56, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That seems like a fair criticism. Unless somebody can find a better citation for his apparent "disagreement", I deleted the words "with which he disagreed" from the sentence, leaving the article to say that he commented upon "the relatively new theory of natural selection" but now without offering an opinon as to what he said.Geoffrey.landis (talk)13:44, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
