Frequently asked questions
1. Why isBhārat Gaṇarājya not rendered inDevanagari script?
Seethis discussion (from 2012) andthis discussion (from 2017), which are codified inWP:INDICSCRIPT.
2. Why was my content removed?
TheIndia page adheres tosummary style, sticking to core topics andskipping excess details. To update economy figures or other content, citecredible sources. SeeWP:V.
3. Why aren't there sections on science and technology, education, media, tourism etc.?
New sections require talk-page consensus. In archived discussions, it was decided to keep them out. Consider expanding their respective daughter articles, such asHistory of India, instead. SeeWP:WPC.
4. Why was my image or external link removed?
To add or remove images and links, start a thread on this page first. SeeWP:FP?,WP:IMAGE, andWP:EL.
5. The map is wrong!
The map shows the official (de jure) borders in undisputed territory and thede facto borders and all related claims where there's a dispute; it cannot exclusively present the official views of India, Pakistan, or China. SeeWP:NPOV.
6. India is a superpower!
Consult the archives of this talk page for discussions of India's status as a superpower before adding any content that makes the suggestion. SeeWP:DUE.
7. Delhi is a state!
To create an Indian state, theParliament of India must pass a law to that effect—see Articles 2 through 4 of theConstitution of India, full texthere. TheSixty-ninth Amendment, which was enacted in 1991, added Article 239AA to the constitution. It proclaimed the National Capital Territory of Delhi, gave it a legislative assembly, and accorded it special powers that most union territories lack. But Delhi was not made a state. Several crucial powers were retained by the central government, such asresponsibility for law and order. Delhi also does not have a governor; instead, a lieutenant governor presides. UnlikeHimachal Pradesh, which gained statehood in 1970, andGoa, which gained it in 1987, Delhi continues to be listed as a union territory by theFirst Schedule.
8. Add Hindi as the national language/hockey as the national sport!
Hindi is theofficial language, notnational language. There is no national language, but there are constitutionally recognized languages, commonly known asSchedule 8 languages. English also serves as a subsidiary official language until the universal use of Hindi is approved by the states and parliament.
Field hockey is not the national sport as per this article"In RTI reply, Centre says India has no national game",Deccan Herald, August 2012.
This article iswritten inIndian English, which has its own spelling conventions (colour, travelled, centre, analysed, defence) and some terms may be different or absent from othervarieties of English. According to therelevant style guide, this should not be changed withoutbroad consensus.

Simplification in the lead

[edit]

Instead of writing the most populous country and democracy separately, it would be better to write it as the most populous country and democracy. The latter is more precise.2409:40E0:41:870C:8000:0:0:0 (talk)22:06, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It would be.JDiala (talk)03:06, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We should be removing the populous democracy part. It has been highly contentious and debated in recent years, and Wikipedia should not be taking sides as such, especially not stating so inWP:WIKIVOICE. —EarthDude (wannatalk?)07:30, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The next nearest is the United States, it is not particularly contentious.CMD (talk)10:22, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, stating most populous country is sufficient, most populous democracy is redundant. The most populous country which operates on democratic principles will obviously be the most populous democracy.2409:40E0:100D:7AFF:8000:0:0:0 (talk)12:14, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And writing most populous country in enough to understand, what is the importance of stating since when?2409:40E0:100D:7AFF:8000:0:0:0 (talk)12:15, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This has been like this for years now. The editors gotta look into this and make it more precise.2409:40E0:100D:7AFF:8000:0:0:0 (talk)12:16, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

"viewed with tolerance"

[edit]

Hi, a wonderful article! Regarding the lead, I did wonder if there may be a better word than "tolerance" in the last sentence, "India's wildlife, which has traditionally been viewed with tolerance in its culture, is supported in protected habitats." Tolerance has that connotation of stiff liberal politeness, like you're just putting up with something you're prone to dislike, which is not exactly the case in India, where animals are woven in very tightly and seriously with traditional myths and religious understanding, and are in some cases actively worshipped and taken care of as an avatar/symbol/friend of a deity. This is of course not to say that they're uniformly beloved everywhere and there is zero viciousness towards wildlife, but it's still somewhere above tolerance I feel. Maybe: "respect," "reverence," "affection," "importance."108.12.250.219 (talk)03:02, 10 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
