News/Archive gap

[edit]

One big problem I find with trying to use GN for research is that there is an approx. 3-month gap between the available archives and the current (30-day) news service. Therefore on 1 May 2009 you can find articles from the beginning of time till the end of December 2008, and from April 2009, but not from the three months in between. Google says this is because of the processing of data from News to Archives, which may be so, but does make their service almost useless for researching how news stories have developed.82.46.180.160 (talk)04:37, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Syntax

[edit]

I've figured out the syntax for subscribing to the GoogleNews feeds for any particular news source:[info]or for all the sources from one country or state:[scroll down to Sunday for brandnew examples]

I'd like some help making these feeds easily accessible, and collectively doing a Wikipedia page sounds best to me. It would be called "Google News feeds by country" and for each country or state it would offer a link to the 'location' feed for that country[eg: Iraq] followed by the individual feeds for each source in that country. --robotwisdom11:47, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

9/11

[edit]

Is there any truth to the anecdotal evidence that the origin of Google News was its caching of valuable news articles just after the 9/11 terrorist attacks?

There is, actually:http://www.google.co.uk/en/uk/press/files/news-booket-en.pdfMethode (talk)18:39, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Google news logo.gif

[edit]

Image:Google news logo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used underfair use but there is noexplanation or rationale as to why its use inthis Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to theboilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent withfair use.

Please go tothe image description page and edit it to include afair use rationale. Using one of the templates atWikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described oncriteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at theMedia copyright questions page. Thank you.

the age of google news cannot be correct

[edit]

Is someone messing with this page? A 2002 launch is simply not possible - Google News (or at least a news aggregation service offered by Google athttp://www.google.com/news) existed by mid-2001 at least. On 9/11/2001, "Google News" evencrashed. What gives?—Precedingunsigned comment added by152.12.132.33 (talk)18:43, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Google news broken/Degraded.

[edit]

Starting about 2 months ago, I would do a search on Google News for something I was pretty sure would have been in the news and produced hits, and get no hits (i.e. 0 search results). This happened several times, but I didn't think much of it 'till I did a search for something that I was absolutely sure had been in the news, and I was absolutely sure had been in many news articles indexed by google news resulting in a large number of search results, and yet found that I now got 0 news search results. Apologies for the self-reference, but this is the search about which I'm certain, and have corroborating archives. A normal google news search for my name produces 0 hits today[1] even though I appeared in AP articles and several other articles and TV news summaries. I finally figured out the data is still there; the UI is broken.this shows the articles, but is hidden.

I'm updating the article to reflect this change by removing un-cited claims that suggest it provides a long term search-able archive. --Elvey (talk)20:09, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not in Danish and Finnish

[edit]

To me is appears odd that this service isn't available in Danish and Finnish as it appears to be available in all other major European languages, including Norwegian which is spoken by fewer people than both the languages mentioned. Is it known why this is the case? __meco (talk)10:06, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Languages (Number of)

[edit]

Does Ukranian have to be added to the list. Ukraine has two versions. I'm guessing they are Russian and Ukranian. I think that would take the total number up to 25.—Precedingunsigned comment added by115.118.185.112 (talk)14:51, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And Vietnamese too I guess. So 26?—Precedingunsigned comment added by115.118.219.82 (talk) anything talk at the16:31, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Technical specifications

[edit]

I don't think the first sentence in section "Technical specifications" belongs there.

Indymedia?

[edit]

The Sources section says "see the above mention of Indymedia". That is the only mention of it in the article. Either remove that reference to a now-nonexistent discussion, or add said discussion back into the article.Morgan Wick (talk)00:19, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Example list of sources for English edition, as of May 2007 subsection

[edit]

May 2007 is too long ago for this and I cannot find the source. Does Google News Report still exist?— Precedingunsigned comment added by69.119.92.54 (talk)11:57, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sci/Tech Section Split

[edit]

The article reports on the split of the Sci/Tech section after explaining that there are various language versions of Google News. As this would imply that the section split was performed on all language versions (which is not the case), I edited the respective text. However, I do not know whether the section split was ever performed on any non-English Google News version (as was announced in the cited source), or if it wasn't, why not. If anyone has any information on this, please extend the article accordingly.129.69.215.18 (talk)09:22, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

removing POV tag with no active discussion perTemplate:POV

[edit]

I've removed an old neutrality tag from this page that appears to have no active discussion per the instructions atTemplate:POV:

This template is not meant to be a permanent resident on any article. Remove this template whenever:
  1. There is consensus on the talkpage or the NPOV Noticeboard that the issue has been resolved
  2. It is not clear what the neutrality issue is, and no satisfactory explanation has been given
  3. In the absence of any discussion, or if the discussion has become dormant.

Since there's no evidence of ongoing discussion, I'm removing the tag for now. If discussion is continuing and I've failed to see it, however, please feel free to restore the template and continue to address the issues. Thanks to everybody working on this one! --Khazar2 (talk)00:53, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of news sources

[edit]

It is odd that Google News' history of removing news sources, valid or not, and which has been a point of contention, is not mentioned anywhere in the article.— Precedingunsigned comment added by73.88.59.121 (talk)03:16, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
