Seems like a relatively quick one. Will review.IAWW (talk)16:36, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Lead is good and an appropriate size for a short article like this.

Mountaineering

[edit]

What is the "MIT Outing Club" and why is it notable enough for inclusion?IAWW (talk)16:36, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not only is this mentioned in multiple independent sources, the Gilbertson brothers state that they "attribute much of their success and interest in mountaineering to the MIT Outing Club (MITOC). While at MIT, Matthew and Eric were active members of the MITOC, and held various positions including president and members of the board of directors."[1] (t ·c)buidhe01:52, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Gilbertson said that climbing Pobeda was more difficult than climbing K2 without supplementary oxygen: Did he climb Pobeda with or without supplementary oxygen? That should be clearer.IAWW (talk)16:36, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Source does not say. It would be original research, but oxygen is rarely used on peaks under 8000m. (t ·c)buidhe23:33, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Surveying

[edit]

He discovered that the summit of Mount Saint Helens has been eroding at a rate of 4 inches (100 mm) annually since 1989, and had lost so much elevation it was no longer one of the 100 highest peaks in Washington:WP:CINS error. Suggest adding "it" rather than removing the comma as the sentence is quite long.IAWW (talk)16:36, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

In this survey, he worked with Larry Signani, who had conducted three earlier surveys of the mountain for the Lands Surveyors Association of Washington: Cut or move to a footnote as unnecessary detailIAWW (talk)16:36, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Citation numbers based onthis version.

I think some of the more exceptional claims like:

  • Along with Matthew, Gilbertson discovered the high points of Togo, Guinea-Bissau and Ivory Coast
  • Gilbertson became the third American to achieve the Snow Leopard award by summiting all five peaks above 7,000 metres (23,000 ft) in the former Soviet Union
  • Gilbertson and his brother were the first to climb the high points of all 50 states in the United States

Should have more than one citation if at all possible.IAWW (talk)16:36, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Health/formatting (Criterion 2a)checkY

[edit]

No issues for GA

Reliability (Criterion 2b)checkY

[edit]

I think all the web sources can be considered reliable enough. Most are subject specialized news sources, which appear reliable based on their staff.

Earwig finds nothing. I found no issues on the spot check.

Scope (Criteria 3a, 3b)checkY

[edit]

Seems to include pretty much all the information available

Stable (Criterion 5)checkY

[edit]

It's quite new and I read the two previous deletion discussions. It seems that this page is now notable though, as several new sources mention him, including two which have his name in the title. I don't see any reason to suspect this won't be stable post GA review.

Suggestions (not needed for GA promotion)

[edit]

Suggest archiving non-dead links to preventlink rot. It's a tedious task, but in a year or two, some of the links will almost certainly be dead. Also it means people outside the US (like me!) will be able to access [14] and [17].IAWW (talk)16:36, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Usually there is a bot that comes around and does this across the entire GA corpus. (t ·c)buidhe02:18, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The first sentence I think would be a bit better if his most notable activities (mountain climbing and surveying) were mentioned first, before his other positions.IAWW (talk)16:36, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have partly implemented this, I don't entirely agree but it's the custom for the person's day job to be placed first even if it's not what they're notable for. (t ·c)buidhe02:18, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the changes, I just found that he had donated some files to Commons and one of his papers was published today (t ·c)buidhe02:15, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
