Takaharu (高原町,Takaharu-chō) is atown located inNishimorokata District,Miyazaki Prefecture,Japan.
As of 1 November 2023[update], the town had an estimatedpopulation of 8137 in 3648 households, and apopulation density of 101.3 persons per km2.[1] The total area of the town is 85.39 km2 (32.97 sq mi).
Takaharu is located in the southwestern part of Miyazaki Prefecture, approximately 40 kilometers west of the prefectural capital at Miyazaki City, and bordersKagoshima Prefecture on the west. Located at the foot of theKirishima volcanic group, approximately 50% of the town area is a highland area, and the remaining 50% is a mountain forest.
Takaharu has ahumid subtropical climate (KöppenCfa) characterized by warm summers and cool winters with light to no snowfall. The average annual temperature in Takaharu is 15.1 °C. The average annual rainfall is 2295 mm with September as the wettest month. The temperatures are highest on average in August, at around 25.2 °C, and lowest in January, at around 4.4 °C.[2]

The area of Takaharu was part of ancientHyūga Province, and during theEdo period was completely within the borders ofSatsuma Domain. In 1871, with theabolition of the han system, the area was incorporated into Kagoshima Prefecture, but was later transferred to Miyazaki Prefecture. The village Takaharu withinNishimorokata District, Miyazaki was established on May 1, 1889 with the creation of the modern municipalities system. Takaharu was raised to town status on October 5, 1934.
Takaharu has amayor-council form of government with a directly elected mayor and aunicameral town council of ten members. Takaharu, collectively with the cities of Ebino and Kobayashi, contributes two members to the Miyazaki Prefectural Assembly. In terms of national politics, the town is part of theMiyazaki 1st district of thelower house of theDiet of Japan.
The local economy is overwhelmingly centered on agriculture and forestry.
Takaharu has four public elementary schools and two public junior high schools operated by the town. The town no longer has a high school.
