Taghkanic Creek[1] is a 30.1-mile-long (48.4 km)[2] tributary toClaverack Creek inColumbia County, New York, in the United States. Via Claverack Creek andStockport Creek, it is part of theHudson River watershed. Its source is in the town ofHillsdale, and it passes through the towns ofCopake,Taghkanic, andLivingston before terminating at Claverack Creek in the town ofGreenport.
Taghkanic orTaughannock is the Native American name for this stream, meaning "forest wilderness"[3] or "in the trees".[4] Other sources cite the fact that the stream has its source on the opposite side of the mountain in Copake through which it flows in an underground stream.[5]
