Tabea Zimmermann (born 8 October 1966) is a Germanviolist who has performed internationally, both as a soloist and achamber musician. She has been artist in residence of theConcertgebouw Orchestra, theBerlin Philharmonic, and theBavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 2004, Zimmermann founded the Arcanto Quartet, astring quartet that performed until 2016. Several composers have written music for her, includingGyörgy Ligeti (theViola Sonata), and she has made her own version of Bartók'sViola Concerto from the composer's sketches.

Zimmermann is a professor at theFrankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and gives master classes at theKronberg Academy and elsewhere. Her awards include the 2020Ernst von Siemens Music Prize.

Life and career

Born inLahr on 8 October 1966,[1] Zimmermann began learning the viola at age three,[1][2] and commenced piano studies at age five.[1][3] At age 13, she studied viola withUlrich Koch at theFreiburg Conservatory and progressed to study withSándor Végh at theMozarteum ofSalzburg.[1][4][5] She soon gained notice in international competitions, winning first prizes inGeneva (1982), the Budapest International Viola Competition (1984), and theMaurice Vieux International Viola Competition in Paris (1983), for which she was awarded an instrument by contemporary luthierÉtienne Vatelot (1980).[1] Since 2019, she has been playing an instrument built for her by Patrick Robin.[6]

As a soloist, Zimmermann has performed with major orchestras such as theLeipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, theBerlin Philharmonic, theBBC Philharmonic, and theOrchestre de la Suisse Romande, and with conductors includingKurt Masur,Bernard Haitink, andNikolaus Harnoncourt. In 1992 she made her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic, performing Bartók'sViola Concerto.[7] She often performedTibor Serly's version of the piece,[8] but after studying the original sketches in 1994, she prepared her own version.[9][10] She played her version in the final concert of the 2023 Kronberg Festival at theCasals Forum, with theFrankfurt Radio Symphony conducted byChristoph Eschenbach.[9]

Zimmermann has been artist in residence, at theKunstfest Weimar [de] in 2008, in Luxembourg in 2009, in Hamburg in 2010,[1] with theConcertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic,[7] and in the 2022/23 season theBavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.[11][12][13]

Zimmermann is also devoted tochamber music, having performed withGidon Kremer,Lars Vogt,Hartmut Höll,Steven Isserlis,Javier Perianes, andPamela Frank at numerous festivals. In 2004, she co-founded the Arcanto Quartet withAntje Weithaas,Daniel Sepec [nl], andJean-Guihen Queyras.[1][14] The quartet played together until 2016.[15] She has also collaborated with theEnsemble Resonanz.[16]

Committed to 20th- and 21st-century repertoire, Zimmermann premiered Ligeti'sViola Sonata, which was written for her,[1] on 23 April 1994 inGütersloh.[5][17][18] Other works written for her includeHeinz Holliger'sRecicanto for viola and orchestra,Wolfgang Rihm's Viola Concerto No. 2 "Über die Linie IV",MonhbyGeorges Lentz,Frank Michael Beyer'sNotte di pasqua andBruno Mantovani's Concerto for Two Violas that she played withAntoine Tamestit.[1]Sally Beamish,Enno Poppe, andJosef Tal also wrote music for her.[5]

Teaching

Zimmermann was on the faculty of theSaarbrücken Music Academy from 1987 to 1989, then the youngest female professor in Germany,[1] and taught at theFrankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts from 1994 to 2002.[5] She then became professor of viola and chamber music at theHochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin until 2023,[1][4] whereAntoine Tamestit was one of her students.[19] Other students of hers includeAmihai Grosz andPauline Sachse.[20][21] As of 2023, Zimmermann is again a professor of viola and chamber music in Frankfurt.[16][22] She gives masterclasses at theKronberg Academy.[17][23]

Other activities

Zimmermann chairs the Foundation Board of theErnst von Siemens Foundation.[24] She is president of the Hindemith Foundation, based inBlonay, Switzerland,[4][25][26] and has chaired the BonnBeethoven House since 2013.[27]

Personal life

Zimmermann was married to the conductorDavid Shallon until his death in 2000; they had two sons.[1][28] Her second husband is the American conductorSteven Sloane; they have a daughter.[1][27]

Awards

Zimmermann has won numerous national and international awards, including theErnst von Siemens Music Prize,[29] theFrankfurter Musikpreis,[16] theHessian Cultural Prize,[30] theRheingau Musik Preis, theHindemith Prize of the City of Hanau, theInternational Classical Music Awards (ICMA) 2017,[31] and the International Prize of the Chigiana Music Academy ofSiena.[12] She received the Officer's Cross of theOrder of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2018.[12][32][33] With the prize money of €250.000 from the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, Zimmermann founded the David Shallon Foundation.[34]
