TheSyrian Communist Party (Arabic:الحزب الشيوعي السوري,romanized: Al-Hizb Ash-Shuyū'ī As-Sūrī) is a bannedcommunist party inSyria. It isMarxist–Leninist andanti-revisionist in its orientation.[3][4][5]
It emerged from a split from the originalSyrian Communist Party and originated from the anti-revisionist and anti-Perestroika faction of the latter.
The party supported theAssad government and was consequently banned by thetransitional government after theAssad government's fall.[6]
The party emerged from a split in theSyrian Communist Party in 1986, as formed by the anti-Perestroika faction led byKhalid Bakdash. Khalid Bakdash died in 1995 and was succeeded as secretary of his party faction by his widow,Wisal Farha Bakdash. At the time of theDamascus Spring in 2000, the party was able to publish a newspaper calledSawt al-Shaab ("Voice of the People"). The party also suffered another rift that year, leading to the formation of thePeople's Will Party led byQadri Jamil.[7]
The party's last secretary general wasAmmar Bakdash, who succeeded his mother in the party's leadership.[8]
Until 29 March 2023,Mohammad Fayez al-Barasha was the party's onlycabinet minister.[9]
Following thefall of the Assad regime, the party was banned by theSyrian transitional government due to its support for theAssad Government.[6] The ban was condemned by theIraqi Communist Party and theCommunist Party of Kurdistan – Iraq.[10]
Ammar Bakdash, the founder of the party died in Greece in July 2025. The Party afterwards sent a letter thanking theCommunist Party of Greece for hospitality to Ammar Bakdash during his stay.[11]
