TheSwedes of Gammalsvenskby (Swedish:Svenskbybor) are descendants of theEstonian Swedes, a Swedish-speaking minority historically residing on theBaltic Sea island ofHiiumaa. In the 1780s, they were deported to the region ofNovorossiya, where they established the village ofGammalsvenskby. Today, this village forms a neighbourhood ofZmiivka, Ukraine.[2]

Genetics

In 2017, as part of aDNA project led by a genetics professor atUppsala University, researchers collected saliva samples from 25 people in Ukraine and from Gammalsvenskby descendants on the Swedish Baltic Sea island ofGotland in order to determine the genetic origin of the Swedish villagers in Gammalsvenskby.[3][4] The preliminary results showed that the Swedish villagers were more genetically similar toBalts than other groups in Sweden.[5]
