Sven Otto Birkeland (born 10 February 1948) is a Norwegian former professionalfootballer who played as amidfielder for the Norwegian national senior and junior teams.[1]
Birkeland was born inKristiansand. He played as amidfielder forStart from 1973–78, and won the league in1978. He began his career atVigør and played forLyn from 1969 to 1973. He also played forJerv and was the coach ofDonn. Birkeland was the match winner againstBodø/Glimt when Start's first league title was secured on 15 October 1978.
He has five caps and one goal for theNorway national team, and made his debut against Sweden in 1967, becoming the firstSørlending to play for Norway.
Birkeland is the father of the former Start playerBernt Christian Birkeland.
