Suzuki (written:鈴木 lit. "bell wood", "bell tree" or "bud tree") is aJapanese surname. As of 2008, it is the second most common surname in Japan, afterSatō, with 1.9 million people registered.[1] It is said to have been named by the Hozumi clan (穂積氏) in theHeian period (794-1185), after suzuki, which means "the ears of rice piled up" in the dialect of southernWakayama andMie prefectures (also known asKumano).[2] 鈴木 areateji.
