Sutatenza (Spanish pronunciation:[sutaˈtensa]) is a town andmunicipality in theEastern Boyacá Province of the department ofBoyacá,Colombia. It is located 125 kilometres (78 mi) from the Colombian capitalBogotá and 118 kilometres (73 mi) from the department capitalTunja. Sutatenza bordersSomondoco,Guateque,Tenza andGaragoa.[1]

Etymology

The name Sutatenza comes fromChibcha and means either "Cloud behind the anchovy" or "Descending to the house of thecacique".[1][2]

History

In the time before theSpanish conquest, Sutatenza, situated in theTenza Valley to the east of theAltiplano Cundiboyacense, was ruled by acacique called Tenzuzucá or Tenzucá, loyal to thezaque ofHunza.ConquistadorGonzalo Jiménez de Quesada in his quest forEl Dorado and the richemerald deposits of theMuisca Confederation visited Sutatenza in 1537.

Modern Sutatenza was not founded until October 22, 1783.[1]

Climate

Sutatenza has asubtropical highland climate (Köppen:Cfb)[3] with mild temperatures and frequent rainfall. Adry season between December and February produces warmer and drier weather.

Economy

Main economical activities of Sutatenza areagriculture andaviculture. A smallsalt mine is operated in thevereda Salitre.[1]
