"Sure Thing " is a song by the American singer and songwriterMiguel . Produced by Happy Perez, the song is included on his debut album,All I Want Is You (2010). It was first posted ontoYouTube in 2007, viaMyspace .[ 1] It was sent to radio as the album's second single in January 2011. TheR&B song featuresneo soul influences, and had been noted for its similarities to the work of singerJon B.
It initially achieved moderate success on the USBillboard Hot 100 , reaching number 36 on the chart. It also reached number one on the US R&B chart, and spent more than fifty total weeks on the chart. "Sure Thing" marked Miguel's first number one hit on theBillboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and it was his most successful single until the release of "Adorn " in 2012. As of July 2013, the song had sold 1,106,000 copies in the United States.[ 2]
Following a resurgence in streaming due to it going viral onTikTok over a decade after its initial release, the song began to re chart worldwide, and it reached new peaks in several countries, including the United Kingdom,[ 3] where it reached number four, becoming Miguel's first top ten hit in the region. Furthermore, it was reissued to US radio in February 2023 and also re entered theBillboard Hot 100, eventually reaching a new peak of number 11 and becoming his first number one hit on the USPop Airplay chart.[ 4]
Lyrically, Miguel uses analogies to express his love interest, such as "You are the chalk / And I could be your blackboard" and "If I'm the lyric baby / You could be the note". Sheet music for the song shows the key ofF♯ minor (F♯m) .[ 5]
The music video premiered on January 5, 2011, was directed byHype Williams and was shot inHonolulu ,Hawaii .
