Surama Padhy, also spelt asSurma Padhi, is an Indian politician fromOdisha. She is anMember of Odisha Legislative Assembly fromRanpur Assembly constituency inNayagarh district. She is currently serving as the 24th Speaker of Odisha Legislative Assembly from 2024.[1] She representsBharatiya Janata Party. She won the2024 Odisha Legislative Assembly election.[2][3]

Early life and education

Padhy is from Ranpur. She married Bipin Bihari Padhy, a chartered accountant. She completed her Master of Arts in 1982 atRavenshaw College which is affiliated withUtkal University.[4]

Career

Padhy won the2024 Odisha Legislative Assembly election fromRanpur Assembly constituency representing theBharatiya Janata Party. She defeated Satyanarayan Pradhan of theBiju Janata Dal by a margin of 15,544 votes.[5][6] Earlier, she lost thrice from Ranpur, the last time in the2019 Odisha Legislative Assembly election to Pradhan by 4,251 votes.[7][8] She is also a former minister of state for cooperation in the 2004Naveen Patnaik BJD government which had an alliance with BJP.[8]
