TheSupreme Council of Government (Spanish:Consejo Supremo de Gobierno) was amilitary junta which,de facto, exercised the role ofhead of state andhead of government of theRepublic of Ecuador from 1976 to 1979, being considered the lastmilitary dictatorship in thehistory of Ecuador.
Formed following the ousting ofdictatorGuillermo Rodríguez (who seized power in the1972 military coup), the Council consisted of three members, representing each branch of theArmed Forces: AdmiralAlfredo Poveda as representative of theNavy and President of the Council, Divisional GeneralGuillermo Durán Arcentales [es] as representative of theArmy and GeneralLuis Leoro Franco [es] as representative of theAir Force.[1]
