TheSunbury wine region is anAustralian Geographical Indication for wine made from grapes grown in a region surrounding the town ofSunbury northwest ofMelbourne in the Australian state ofVictoria. It is one of five regions in thePort Philip zone surrounding Melbourne.[2] The wine region covers suburbs and inner rural areas in the northwestern sector of the Melbourne urban area, extending as far west asBacchus Marsh and northeast toBeveridge on theHume Highway.[3]
The oldest vines date back to the 1850s. They were planted byJames Goodall Francis in 1858 atGoona Warra andJames Johnston atCraiglee in 1864.[4] Top grape varieties grown in the Sunbury region includeShiraz,Cabernet Franc andChardonnay.[1]
