TheSun Way 21 is a Frenchsailboat that was designed byJ&J Design as acruiser and first built in 1989.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
The design was built byJeanneau in France, from 1989 to 1995, with 532 boats completed, but it is now out of production.[1][2][3][4][8][10][11][12]
The Sun Way 21 is a recreationalkeelboat, built predominantly ofpolyesterfiberglass, with wood trim. The hull is solid fiberglass, while the deck has abalsa core. There is also injected foam that makes the boat unsinkable. It has a 7/8fractionalsloop rig, with a deck-stepped pivoting mast, one set of sweptspreaders andaluminum spars with continuousstainless steel wire rigging. The hull has araked stem, a walk-throughreverse transom, an internally mounted spade-typerudder controlled by atiller and a fixed finkeel or optional stub keel and steelcenterboard, with a folding rudder. The fin keel model displaces 1,874 lb (850 kg) and carries 507 lb (230 kg) ofcast iron ballast, while the centerboard version displaces 1,852 lb (840 kg) and carries 441 lb (200 kg) of cast iron external ballast.[1][2][3][4][9]
The keel-equipped version of the boat has a draft of 2.46 ft (0.75 m), while the centerboard-equipped version has a draft of 4.27 ft (1.30 m) with the centerboard extended and 2.13 ft (0.65 m) with it retracted, allowing operation in shallow water or ground transportation on atrailer.[1][2]
The boat is normally fitted with a small 4 or 5 hp (3 or 4 kW)outboard motor for docking and maneuvering.[3][4]
The design has sleeping accommodation for four people, with a double"V"-berth in the bow cabin and two straight settees in the main cabin around a rectangular table. Cabin headroom is 58 in (147 cm).[1][2][3][4]
For sailing downwind the design may be equipped with a symmetricalspinnaker of 269 sq ft (25.0 m2).[3][4]
The design has ahull speed of 5.67 kn (10.50 km/h).[2][3][4]
