Sumoto, Kumamoto

Sumoto (栖本町,Sumoto-machi) was atown located inAmakusa District,Kumamoto Prefecture,Japan.

As of 2003, the town had an estimatedpopulation of 2,903 and adensity of 88.32 persons per km2. The total area was 32.87 km2.

On March 27, 2006, Sumoto, along with the cities ofHondo andUshibuka, and the towns ofAmakusa,Ariake,Goshoura,Itsuwa,Kawaura,Kuratake andShinwa (all fromAmakusa District), was merged to create the new city ofAmakusa and no longer exists as an independentmunicipality.[1]
