Asubvolcanic rock, also known as ahypabyssal rock, is anintrusiveigneous rock that is emplaced at depths less than 2 km (1.2 mi) within thecrust, and has intermediategrain size and oftenporphyritic texture between that ofvolcanic rocks, which are extrusive igneous rocks, andplutonic rocks, which form much deeper in the ground.[1] Subvolcanic rocks includediabase (also known as dolerite) andporphyry. Common examples of subvolcanic rocks are diabase,quartz dolerite,microgranite, anddiorite.[2][3]
