Sonepur, also known asSubarnapur, is a town and district headquarters ofSubarnapur district ofOdisha in India. The district spreads over an area of 2284 km². It is also known as SecondVaranasi of India for its cluster of temples having architectural importance and also of tantricism and secondAllahabad for the Meeting Point (Sangam) of two riversMahanadi and Tel in place just like inAllahabad.^[1] Subarnapur is also famous forsilk,handloom, prawns, terracotta etc.

Sonepur was formerly the capital ofSonepur State, aprincely state ofBritish India.^[2]

As of 2001^[update] Indiacensus,^[3] Sonepur town had a population of 17,535. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Sonepur has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 65%. In Sonepur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
