TheStyr (Ukrainian:Стир;Belarusian:Стыр;Russian:Стырь) is a righttributary of thePripyat, with a length of 494 kilometres (307 mi). Itsbasin area is 13,100 square kilometres (5,100 sq mi) and located in the historical region ofVolhynia.[1][2][3]

The Styr begins nearBrody,Lviv Oblast, then flows intoRivne Oblast,Volyn Oblast, then intoBrest Region ofBelarus where it finally flows into the Pripyat.

Notable settlements located on the river areLutsk,Staryi Chortoryisk andVarash.

History

During theKhmelnytskyi Uprising, theBattle of Berestechko took place in 1651 on the river between armies of thePolish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and theCossacks ofBohdan Khmelnytsky.[4]

During 1915–1916, the Styr river was the front line between theAustro-Hungarian andImperial Russian armies.[5][6]

The river was also a barrier to the German invasion on June 22, 1941, duringOperation Barbarossa on the South-Western Front.
