Cornes was born inUsk.[1] He started his career atHereford United in 1978, making 93 league appearances and scoring 3 league goals between 1978 and 1982.[1][3] He subsequently joinedCheltenham Town,[3] where he won theSouthern Football League Premier Division in the1984–85 season.[4]
