Stuart Channel is astrait in theGulf Islands region of theGulf of Georgia, separatingVancouver Island on the west fromThetis,DeCourcy andPenelakut (Kuper) Islands on the east.[1]Ladysmith Harbour and the town ofChemainus face onto it from Vancouver Island. It is crossed by aBC Ferries route serving Thetis and Penelakut Islands.
CalledSansum Channel by theHudson's Bay Company, that name being related toSansum Narrows just south between Vancouver Island andSaltspring Island, it was named for CaptainCharles Edward Stuart (1817-1863), who was for a long time in charge of the Hudson's Bay Company post at Nanaimo.[2]: 257
