In 2006, Latiolais and colleagues proposed acladogram that attempts to show thephylogenetic relationships of 34 species within the family Strombidae. The authors analysed 31 species in the genusStrombus includingCanarium mutabile (referred to asStrombus mutabilis in their analysis), and three species in the allied genusLambis. The cladogram was based onDNA sequences of both nuclearhistone H3 and mitochondrialcytochrome-c oxidase I (COI) protein-codinggene regions. In this proposed phylogeny,Strombus mutabilis (=Canarium mutabile) andStrombus maculatus are closely related and appear to share acommon ancestor.[2]
