Stoutsburg is anunincorporated community located along the border ofHopewell Township inMercer County andMontgomery Township inSomerset County, in theU.S. state ofNew Jersey.[2][3]County Route 518 passes through the community from the east and west, while Province Line Road passes through north and south. Province Line Road follows theKeith line which formerly separated the provinces ofWest Jersey andEast Jersey, now parts of Hopewell and Montgomery townships respectively.
On June 24, 1778, during theAmerican Revolutionary War, GeneralGeorge Washington held acouncil of war at theJoseph Stout House (Hunt House) located here in preparation for theBattle of Monmouth.[4][5]

All of Hopewell Township, including Stoutsburg, is served by theHopewell Valley Regional School District.[6]
