Stiphodon is agenus offreshwatergobies. They inhabit swift, clear streams close to the sea and are found in large parts ofAsia andOceania. Many of the 36 currently recognized species have extremely restricted distributions on single islands or even single streams. These are small gobies with bodies squarish in cross section. A female ofStiphodon multisquamus with astandard length of 60.4mm is the largestStiphodon individual on record.^[1] Males ofStiphodon species are often vividly colored and a few species are occasionally sold in theaquarium trade, includingStiphodon ornatus,Stiphodon atropurpureus,Stiphodon maculidorsalis,Stiphodon semoni, andStiphodon surrufus.

There are currently 37 recognized species in this genus:

• Stiphodon alcedoMaeda,Mukai &Tachihara, 2012 – Described fromOkinawa andIriomote in theRyukyu Islands,Japan,^[2] but these may bevagrant populations transported to Japan via theKuroshio Current (similar toStiphodon surrufus), and the species may actually beendemic to and present in larger numbers in thePhilippines^[3]

• Stiphodon atropurpureus(Herre, 1927) (Blue neon goby) – Probablyendemic to thePhilippines, but possiblevagrant populations or misidentified specimens have also been recorded fromJapan,Taiwan, southernChina, and southernMalaysia.^[3][9][10] Often confused with the very similarStiphodon semoni, though their native ranges do not overlap. Many other similar-looking species ofStiphodon are also mislabeled asS. atropurpureus in theaquarium trade.^[11][12]
