Steve Davis (November 19, 1952 – March 17, 2013) was aquarterback for theOklahoma Sooners from1973 to1975. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the1976 Orange Bowl, when the Sooners won their fifthnational championship.
Davis led the Sooners to a 32–1–1 (.956) record as their starting quarterback, and holds theNCAA record for winning percentage in that position. With Davis at the helm of thewishbone offense, the Sooners won consecutive national titles in1974 and1975.[2][3][4]Davis was later a commentator forABC andCBS college football telecasts in the 1970s and 1980s.
Born atBarksdale Air Force Base inBossier City, Louisiana, Davis was raised inSallisaw, Oklahoma. Later in life aborn again Christian, he featured as a speaker giving his Christian testimony.
Davis died at age 60 when the small jet in which he was a passenger crashed on approach inSouth Bend, Indiana, on March 17, 2013.[5] TheNTSB report later found that Davis, an experienced pilot but not in theBeechcraft Premier I being used that day, was allowed to fly the plane by the pilot; as the plane neared its destination, Davis inadvertently cut power to the engines, and the pilot was unable to complete an emergency landing successfully.[6][7]
