Steinhatchee (/ˈstnhæi/ STEEN-hatch-ee) is aGulf coastal community in the southern part ofTaylor County, Florida, United States. Steinhatchee is 38 miles (61 km) south of the county seat ofPerry. Just across theSteinhatchee River isJena, which is inDixie County. Steinhatchee is 19.27 miles north of the town ofCross City. Its approximate elevation is 7 feet above sea level.

History

Since the early 19th century, the village of Steinhatchee played an integral part in the foresting industry, particularlycedar used for makingpencils, as well as fishing, crabbing andscalloping.[citation needed] The Steinhatchee River also flows by the community and into theGulf of Mexico.

Hurricane Idalia struck the village of approximately 600 citizens on August 30, 2023, with a storm surge of 6 ft and 80 mph winds that escalated every hour.[5]

At about 7 a.m. local time (EDT) on August 5, 2024,Hurricane Debby made landfall near Steinhatchee as a Category 1 hurricane, with winds up to 80 mph.[6][7][8]

On September 26-27, 2024, Steinhatchee was "hard hit" again by Category 4Hurricane Helene.[9]

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,047 people. Thepopulation density was 327.4 people per square mile. There were 1,555 housing units. The racial makeup of the village was 98.7%White, 0.0%African American, 0.3%Native American, 0.3%Asian, and 0.2% from two or more races.Hispanic orLatino of any race were 1.9% of the population.
