Stavros S. Anthony (Greek:Σταύρος Αντωνίου; born January 13, 1957)[1] is an American politician and retired law enforcement officer who is the 37thlieutenant governor of Nevada, since 2023. Anthony won the2022 Nevada lieutenant governor election, defeating incumbentDemocratLisa Cano Burkhead.[2][3] A member of theRepublican Party, he served as Member ofLas Vegas City Council from 2009 to December 2022.[4] He was appointedMayor Pro Tem of Las Vegas byMayorCarolyn Goodman, and served in that capacity from July 2011 to April 2015 and was re-appointed June 8, 2020.[5] Anthony unsuccessfully ran in the2015 Las Vegas mayoral election.

Early life and education

Stavros Anthony was born on January 13, 1957.[6] He is aGreek Cypriot-American whose parents came to theUnited States fromCyprus in the 1950s.[7]

He graduated with abachelor of arts inCriminal Justice fromWayne State University in 1980. In 1987, Anthony graduated with a Master of Arts inPolitical Science from theUniversity of Nevada Las Vegas. In 1999, he received hisPh.D. inSociology from University of Nevada Las Vegas. He has also attended theUniversity of Louisville and theFBI National Academy inQuantico, Virginia.[8]

Personal life

Anthony is of Greek descent and grew up a member of theGreek Orthodox Church. Anthony was a past member and president of the board of directors for St. John Greek Orthodox Church atLas Vegas.[9] He has been married for 41 years. He also has two daughters who are both graduates of theUniversity of Nevada, Reno.[10]
