Astate hospital is ahospital funded and operated by thegovernment of astate. In some countries, such asSouth Africa, the term is synonymous withpublic hospital.[1] In other countries, like theUnited States, general public hospitals are operated bylocal governments.
In the United States, due in part to the efforts ofDorothea Dix, the term "state hospital" generally refers to a publicpsychiatric hospital operated by astate government for persons committed to compulsory psychiatric care after being foundnot guilty of serious violent crimes on the basis of insanity.
In theUnited Kingdom, the term may refer to one particular psychiatric hospital known as theState Hospital.
