Stark Street, formerly known as Baseline Road, is an east-west-running street inPortland, Oregon, in the United States. The street is named afterBenjamin Stark, and is divided asSoutheast Stark Street andSouthwest Stark Street by theWillamette River. A stretch of Stark Street has been designatedSouthwest Harvey Milk Street to commemorateLGBTQ rights activistHarvey Milk.
On the east side of the Willamette River and in parts ofWashington County, Stark Street follows theWillamette Baseline.
In late 2017, activists proposed renaming Southwest Stark Street for gay rights activistHarvey Milk, noting a history of racism and support of slavery by Stark.[1] In June 2018, the city council approved renaming the 13-block stretch of Stark from Southwest 11th Street and SouthwestNaito Parkway withinDowntown Portland[2] as Southwest Harvey Milk Street.[3] The name change took effect immediately upon the council's approval of the ordinance enacting it.[4]
