Stanley Purl Menzo (born 15 October 1963) is a Dutch former professionalfootballer who played as agoalkeeper, and is the current manager of theSuriname national team. He previously worked as amanager ofAGOVV,AFC,Volendam,Cambuur,Lierse,Ajax Cape Town,Aruba andBeijing Guoan.
Most of his professional career was spent atAjax (ten full seasons), appearing in more than 300 official matches with the club and winning nine major titles.
Menzo represented theNetherlands national team in oneWorld Cup and oneEuropean Championship.
Born inParamaribo,Suriname, Menzo arrived atEredivisie giantsAjax at the age of 19, from amateurs A.V.V. Zeeburgia.[1]
After deputising forHans Galjé during the 1983–84 and 1984–85 seasons, in which Menzo played only a few matches in April 1984, May 1985 and June 1985, and after a loan to fellow league sideHaarlem (September 1983 – March 1984), he became the starter for the1985–86 campaign. Newly appointed managerJohan Cruyff believed that Menzo was one of the first goalkeepers who could also make his mark as a field player.
In the 1980s, Menzo was subjected toracist abuse from fans.[2]
Menzo then proceeded to remain an undisputed starter for seven full seasons, helping Ajax to the1989–90 national title, as well as the1986–87 European Cup Winners' Cup and the1991–92 UEFA Cup. However, after a game in the latter competitionthe following season, a 4–2 loss atAuxerre, during which he scored anown goal, he lost his place to youth graduateEdwin van der Sar, and never regained it.
In the summer of 1994, Menzo signed withPSV Eindhoven, where he backed upRonald Waterreus for two seasons. The 33-year-old managed to revive his career in Belgium withLierse, which he helped win oneleague and onecup, eventually amassing nearly 100 official appearances. For a brief period of time, he also played in France forBordeaux, arriving in August 1997 to replaceGilbert Bodart. However, having lost his place toUlrich Ramé (who would be the club's first-choice for the next decade), he returned to Lierse in January 1998.
In the summer of 2001, after a second spell at Ajax, Menzo joined amateur clubAGOVV, helping it to theamateur title. He retired from football at the end of the season.
Menzo gained sixcaps forthe Netherlands, the first arriving in 1989. He then spent nearly three years without any further appearances, but was summoned for the squads present at both the1990 FIFA World Cup andUEFA Euro 1992, as third-choice.
After legendaryHans van Breukelen retired from international play following the latter competition, Menzo was named the starter for thequalification stages of the1994 World Cup; following two unassuming performances, the 1–2 loss inNorway and a 2–2 home draw againstPoland, he was benched, and ultimately did not even make the squad at all (Ed de Goey,Theo Snelders and van der Sar would be the goalkeepers listed as starter, reserve and third respectively).
In the summer of 2004, after former Ajax teammateMarco van Basten became head coach of the national team, Menzo was named its goalkeeping coach, remained there for two years.[3]
When coachPeter Bosz left in June 2002, Menzo became AGOVV's manager, remaining in the position for only one season: AGOVV became a professional club in thesecond division, but he did not have the qualifications to exercise in that category, subsequently moving to Amsterdam-based amateur clubAFC.[4]
In February 2005, Menzo received the necessary diploma to coach professional clubs. That summer, he returned as head manager of AGOVV. A year later, he joinedVolendam,[5] lasting two seasons (incomplete) and signing withCambuur,[6] which he led to the second position in the second level in2009–10, even though the team ultimately failed in the playoffs.
In October 2010, Menzo resigned from his position at Cambuur in order to joinVitesse as assistant to new head coachAlbert Ferrer.[7] In May 2013, he became the head coach ofLierse,[8] where he stayed until his sacking at the end of August 2014.[9] On 28 October 2016, Menzo was appointed head coach of South African Premier Soccer League team,Ajax Cape Town. He left just before Christmas 2017.
On 14 January 2019, Menzo was appointed as the manager of the reserve team ofBeijing Sinobo Guoan in China.[10]
On 29 August 2022, Menzo was appointed as the manager for Beijing Guoan's first team.[11] His appointment was terminated less than a year later on 11 June 2023 after a mediocre start tothe team's 2023 season that saw the team settle in mid-table positions.[12]
