Stanley Phillip Gold (born September 10, 1942) is the former president andCEO ofShamrock Holdings,Roy E. Disney's private investment company, from 1985 to 2013, and is currently serving as chairman of itsboard of directors. He was on theWalt Disney Company board, in 1984 and during 1987–2003. He and Roy resigned to publicly campaign for the ousting of then-CEO andchairmanMichael Eisner.[2] He had also helped to both oust former CEORon W. Miller, and hire Eisner, in 1984.[3] He is a past chairman of theUSCboard of trustees, and of theUniversity of Southern California Law School, and has been a significant political contributor.
Gold was born to aJewish family[4] inLos Angeles,California.[5] He grew up in South Los Angeles, nearDorsey High School. The family moved to theSan Fernando Valley when he was a teenager. After graduation fromVan Nuys High School, he enteredUniversity of California, Berkeley. There, he dated his future wife, Ilene. He completed anA.B. inpolitical science atU.C.L.A. and, in 1967, earned aJuris Doctor degree atUniversity of Southern California, then completedpost-graduate work atCambridge University,England.[1]
He practiced law, withMartin Gang, at Gang, Tyre, Ramer & Brownlaw firm, from 1968, later becoming itsmanagingpartner.[1] He specialized incorporate acquisitions, sales and financing.
He has served as president ofShamrock Broadcasting; president, then chairman, ofCentral Soya; chairman ofEnterra Corporation, chairman of Israeli investment firm Koor Industries Ltd. (NYSE: KOR), and chairman ofTadiran, among other positions.
At a banquet honoringU.S. AmbassadorJohn Marshall Evans, on 4 March 2007; Gold pledged $100,000 to theUSC Institute of Armenian Studies.[6] In 2001, he pledged $500,000 to establish theMartin Gang Scholarship Fund atHebrew Union College;Roy and Patty Disney pledged an additional $100,000.[7]
Gold was a fund raiser and donor forEhud Barak's successful campaign in the1999 Israeli prime ministerial election.[8]
Gold has been a contributor to American federal political campaigns for many years, largely contributing toDemocrats, both candidates and organizations, such as the (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee,Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, andDemocratic National Committee); Gold has also donated to someRepublican party candidates, includingGeorge W. Bush,Robert Dole,Richard Lugar,Mitt Romney,Arlen Specter,William Weld, andPete Wilson).OpenSecrets reported donations of $238,000 during 1993 to 17 December 2008, including a few non-federal contributions.[9]
He is a supporter of theTwo-state solution in the Middle East.[4] In April 2013, Gold was one of 100 prominent American Jews who sent a letter to Israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu, urging him to "work closely" with Secretary of StateJohn Kerry, "to devise pragmatic initiatives, consistent with Israel's security needs, which would represent Israel's readiness to make painful territorial sacrifices for the sake of peace."[10]
Among the artifacts displayed in hisstudy athome are personalized autographs from bothBabe Ruth andStan Musial. He collectsPorsche automobiles.[1][11]
Stanley Gold, chairman of the USC Board of Trustees, challenged the 1,000 attendees to expand their support for the institute.
