
St Brides Wentloog (also spelledSt Bride's Wentloog orSt Brides Wentlooge[1] or simplySt Bride's;Welsh:Llansanffraid Gwynllŵg) is a hamlet to the south west of thecity ofNewport inSouth Wales.
The hamlet lies in theparish ofWentlooge and electoral district (ward) ofMarshfield. Like most of the settlements on theWentloog Level it lies on land behind the sea wall,[2] reclaimed from theBristol Channel,[3] and criss-crossed by large and small drainage ditches, known locally asreens.[4]
The church of St Bride is dedicated toSaint Bridget. It is an ancient building, largely rebuilt in the 15th century, of stone in theDecorated andPerpendicular styles.[5] It consists ofchancel,nave, south porch and an unusually fine perpendicular embattled western tower housing six bells, four of which are dated 1734 and bear inscriptions. A plaque inside the porch marks the high-tide level of theBristol Channelfloods of 1607.[6]
The village was the birthplace ofLyn Harding (1867–1952), actor of stage, silent and talkie films, and radio.
