Holocentrinae is asubfamily ofHolocentridae containing 40 recognized species and one proposed species. Its members are typically known assquirrelfish and all arenocturnal. All threegenera in the subfamily are found in the Atlantic andHolocentrus is restricted to this ocean. Most species in generaNeoniphon andSargocentron are from theIndo-Pacific region and several of these occur in theIndian Ocean west of the southern tip ofIndia.[2] A fossil genus of the subfamily isEoholocentrum from theEarly Eocene of Italy.[3]
A rare example of the fish is featured inIan Fleming's 1960James Bond short story "The Hildebrand Rarity".
