New York has twoMajor League Baseball (MLB) teams, theNew York Yankees (based inthe Bronx) and theNew York Mets (based inQueens). New York is home to threeNational Hockey League (NHL) franchises: theNew York Rangers (based inManhattan), theNew York Islanders (based inElmont) and theBuffalo Sabres (based inBuffalo). New York has twoNational Basketball Association (NBA) teams, theNew York Knicks (based in Manhattan), and theBrooklyn Nets (based inBrooklyn). New York has oneMajor League Soccer team:New York City FC (based in the Bronx). TheNew York Red Bulls play inSports Illustrated Stadium, located in nearbyHarrison, New Jersey.

New York is the home of threeNational Football League (NFL) teams, the geographical home of one team, theBuffalo Bills (based in the suburb ofOrchard Park). TheNew York Giants andNew York Jets also represent New York and exclusively representing theNew York metropolitan area and were previously located in New York City, though they play inMetLife Stadium, located inEast Rutherford, New Jersey, and both have their headquarters and training facilities in New Jersey. The Giants and Jets still represent New York along with the Bills, with the Giants & Jets also exclusively representing the New York metropolitan area. The Meadowlands stadium hostedSuper Bowl XLVIII in 2014, in which New York and New Jersey shared hosting duties.

Former professional sports franchises in New York include MLB'sBrooklyn Dodgers (previously based in Brooklyn) andNew York Giants (previously based in Manhattan); NBA'sSyracuse Nationals (previously based inGeddes andSyracuse),Buffalo Braves (previously based in Buffalo), andRochester Royals (previously based inRochester); NHL'sNew York Americans (previously based in Manhattan); and the NASL'sNew York Cosmos (previously based inthe Bronx,Randall's Island, andEast Rutherford) andRochester Lancers (previously based in Rochester).

There are a variety of minor league teams and leagues throughout the State of New York. TheAmerican Hockey League has three of its 31 teams in upstate New York. Baseball leagues that include New York in their territory include the class AAAInternational League (three teams), class AADouble-A Northeast (theBinghamton Rumble Ponies), independent professionalAtlantic League (theLong Island Ducks), and amateur baseball leagues such as theNew York Collegiate Baseball League, thePerfect Game Collegiate Baseball League and the Southwestern New York Men's Baseball League.

Numerous college sports teams play in the State of New York at all levels; the Division IIIState University of New York Athletic Conference andEmpire 8 consist almost entirely of New York–based teams.

The state of New York hosted theOlympic Winter Games in1932 and1980 inLake Placid.

Olympics

New York hosted the1932 and1980 Winter Olympics atLake Placid. The 1980 Games are known for the USA–USSR hockey game dubbed the "Miracle on Ice" in which a group of American college students and amateurs defeated the heavily favored Soviet national ice hockey team 4–3 and went on to win the gold medal against Finland. Along withSt. Moritz, Switzerland andInnsbruck, Austria, Lake Placid is one of three cities to have hosted the Winter Olympic Games twice.

New York Citybid to host the2012 Summer Olympics but lost toLondon.
