The (Northern)Sporades[a] are anarchipelago along the east coast ofGreece, northeast of the island ofEuboea,[2] in theAegean Sea. They consist of 24 islands, four of which are permanently inhabited:Alonnisos,Skiathos,Skopelos andSkyros.[2] They may also be referred to as the Thessalian Sporades (Θεσσαλικές Σποράδες).

Etymology

"Sporades" means "those scattered" (compare with "sporadic").[3]FromClassical Antiquity the name has referred to the Aegean island groups outside the central archipelago of theCyclades.

Administration

As part of the 2011Kallikratis government reform, theSporadesRegional Unit (Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Σποράδων) was created out of part of the formerMagnesia Prefecture,region ofThessaly. The regional unit is subdivided into 3 municipalities. These are:[4]

The island ofSkyros and a few uninhabited islets in its area are part of theEuboea regional unit and theadministrative region of Central Greece.
