Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is an upcoming American animatedsuperhero film based onMarvel Comics featuring the characterMiles Morales / Spider-Man. Directed byBob Persichetti andJustin K. Thompson from a screenplay byPhil Lord and Christopher Miller andDavid Callaham, it is thedirect sequel toSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) and the final installment in theSpider-Verse trilogy.Shameik Moore stars as the voice ofMiles, alongsideHailee Steinfeld,Jason Schwartzman,Karan Soni,Daniel Kaluuya, andNicolas Cage. The film continues from thecliffhanger ending ofAcross the Spider-Verse, with Miles trapped in an alternate universe trying to save his family. It is produced byColumbia Pictures andSony Pictures Animation, and to be distributed bySony Pictures Releasing.
Sony began developing a sequel toSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse before that film's release in 2018, and eventually decided to split it into two films, which was revealed in December 2021. The third film was titled in April 2022 and given a March 2024 release date, while early work coincided with the production ofAcross the Spider-Verse before that film was prioritized. The script and animation ofBeyond the Spider-Verse underwent significant changes before the2023 SAG-AFTRA strike delayed production and its release date in July. After the second film's release and the end of the strike, work resumed in December. The writers and directors were revealed a year later, and a new release date was announced in March 2025.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 18, 2027.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse begins immediately after the events ofSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), followingMiles Morales trapped and on the run in an alternate universe while trying to save his family.[1][2][3]
Additional cast members reprising their voice roles from the previousSpider-Verse films areMarvin Jones III asLonnie Lincoln / Tombstone, analbino gangster,[10]Greta Lee asLyla, theartificial intelligence assistant for theSpider-Society andMiguel O'Hara / Spider-Man 2099,[11] andJharrel Jerome as the Earth-42 version ofMiles G. Morales / Prowler.[12][3]

By November 2018, ahead of the release ofSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) the next month,Sony Pictures Animation had begun development on a sequel to the film.[13]Phil Lord and Christopher Miller returned from the first film as producers. After writing down the story they wanted to tell for the sequel,[14] which featured the characterthe Spot as the villain while a planned third film was in early development, they realized that it was too much for a single film and decided tosplit the second film into two parts by February 2021.[15][14][16] This was revealed in December 2021 along with the titlesSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) and(Part Two). Work on both parts was taking place simultaneously,[14] with Lord and Miller working on them with directorsJoaquim Dos Santos,Kemp Powers, andJustin K. Thompson.[17] The second part was initially expected to be released in 2023,[14] but in April 2022 it was given a release date of March 29, 2024, whenSony Pictures pushed the release of the first part from October 2022 to June 2023.[18] The two films were renamed at that time, becomingSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) andSpider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.[19] Around this time, major aspects of the third film's script, storyboards, and some visual development work andconcept tests that occurred when the film was being developed as the second part were reportedly shelved and put on hold so those resources could be used to complete the second film first. By then,Beyond the Spider-Verse was internally not expected to meet its March 2024 release date, which was deemed unrealistic due to the film's technical aspects and high expectations,[20][21][15] and it was not expected to be released until 2026 or 2027.[15] During theAnnecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2022, Sony announced that the Spot would serve as the antagonist in bothAcross the Spider-Verse andBeyond the Spider-Verse.[6] In May 2023, Miller said that while the beginning and ending ofBeyond the Spider-Verse had been relatively figured out, the middle was "still a little squishy".[22]
Following the release ofAcross the Spider-Verse in June 2023, Lord and Miller said thatBeyond the Spider-Verse would conclude their trilogy ofSpider-Verse films and thestory arc ofMiles Morales.[16] The duo also responded to reports of the film's potential delays and lack of production progress, saying that the production would take a necessary amount of time to complete the film and that they would not reserve a release date if it did not fit within their schedule.[23] At this time, Sony had reportedly restarted work on the script, which had yet to include an ending.[24] The following month, Sony removedBeyond the Spider-Verse from its release schedule due to the2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which prevented the voice cast from recording dialogue. The March 2024 date was given to Sony'sGhostbusters: Frozen Empire, and a new release date was expected to be scheduled in the following weeks.[25] After the strike ended in November, voice recording forBeyond the Spider-Verse was set to resume imminently, although it was unclear if the film would still be released in 2024.[26] Production on the film had resumed by December 2023, when Miller said the story would provide a "satisfying conclusion" to theSpider-Verse trilogy that would be as emotional as the prior films.[27] Lord reiterated this the next month when he said it would further emotionally explore Miles and the character's relationships with his parents,Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman, andPeter B. Parker. He explained that after the preceding film'scliffhanger ending, which saw Miles trapped in analternate universe known asEarth-42,Beyond the Spider-Verse would see the character deal with a "sense of betrayal" and explore how it becomes affirmative through the goodness and love the other characters have for him and how this "translates into his growth and success".[1] In April 2024, singerd4vd said he worked on the film and that it would be released in 2025;[28][29] at that point, Sony had reserved the release date of June 27, 2025, for an unspecified Marvel film,[30] but that date was later removed while the studio ultimately did not plan to release the film that year.[31][32]
After Sony Pictures CEOTony Vinciquerra said in May 2024 that the studio was exploring different opportunities to make their films less expensive and more efficient by primarily usingartificial intelligence (AI), which was a central issue in the2023 Hollywood labor disputes,[33] Miller responded to concerns regarding the use of AI inBeyond the Spider-Verse, stating thatgenerative artificial intelligence would not be used in the film. He explained their goal for theSpider-Verse films was to create visual styles not used in major computer-animated films and not to repurpose other artists' work through AI. Somemachine learning technology, which is distinct from generative AI as it is based on work already done on the project, had been used bySony Pictures Imageworks to assist animators during the production of the franchise's preceding films.[34] ComposerDaniel Pemberton said the next month that the creative team was "beavering away" on the film. He admitted that they felt pressured in making the film as the trilogy's conclusion because they had set a high bar for themselves, explaining that they sought to avoid repeating the "mistakes" of the third installments in other franchises, such asThe Godfather Part III (1990).[35]Karan Soni, who voicesPavitr Prabhakar / Spider-Man India, said in August that voice recording was slated to begin in "a few months" and that the film was "deep in production".[7] The following month, journalistJeff Sneider reported thatBeyond the Spider-Verse was unlikely to be released until 2027 at the earliest. He said this was to allow the animators more time to work on the film after several scenes had been scrapped and changed, and because Sony was not expected to release the film within the same year as Sony's live-action filmSpider-Man: Brand New Day, which was scheduled for release in July 2026.[21][15][36] Sneider reported that this film's release delay had surprised some of its animators, who were said to be relieved by the decision.[21][15] Pemberton and Miller subsequently denied that a majority of the film had been "scrapped" as previously reported, saying that thefilm reels were being produced.[37]
Bob Persichetti and Thompson were confirmed to be directingBeyond the Spider-Verse in December 2024, when Jinko Gotoh joined as a producer, and Lord and Miller were confirmed to have written the script withAcross the Spider-Verse co-writerDavid Callaham. Persichetti was a co-director ofInto the Spider-Verse and an executive producer ofAcross the Spider-Verse, while Thompson was aproduction designer on the first film and a co-director of the latter.[38] While Powers and Dos Santos had been expected to return as directors fromAcross the Spider-Verse alongside Thompson,[39] Miller said Persichetti and Thompson had been the film's directors since production began.[40] At the end of the month, Sneider further reported that there was potential forBeyond the Spider-Verse to be released in 2026 becauseBrand New Day had the potential to be delayed until 2027 instead.[41] In January 2025,Jharrel Jerome—the voice actor for the Earth-42 version ofMiles G. Morales / Prowler—said voice recording had yet to begin because the production was still "figuring out" several details, but he felt positive about the process.[12] At Sony'sCinemaCon panel in March, the trio of Lord, Persichetti, and Thompson acknowledged the importance of theSpider-Verse franchise to several audiences and describedBeyond the Spider-Verse as a "massive finale". The pair announced the film's new release date of June 4, 2027, explaining that they "could not run it back" and were ensuring they were taking enough time to make the film right. Lord said the film would begin immediately afterAcross the Spider-Verse and see Miles on the run as a fugitive from theSpider-People across the multiverse and that he may not be able to rely on his friends, such as Gwen, to help him save his family.[2][3] In July 2025, the release date was delayed by three weeks to June 25, 2027,[42] but was moved up in September 2025 to June 18, 2027.[43]Alice Brooks serves as the cinematographer,[44] while Mike Andrews is the lead editor, returning fromAcross the Spider-Verse.[45]
Several actors reprise their roles from the previousSpider-Verse films, includingShameik Moore as Miles Morales,[4]Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman,[5]Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar / Spider-Man India,[7]Jason Schwartzman as the Spot,[6]Daniel Kaluuya asHobie Brown / Spider-Punk,[8]Nicolas Cage asSpider-Man Noir,[9]Jharrel Jerome as the Miles G. Morales / Prowler of Earth-42,[12]Marvin Jones III asLonnie Lincoln / Tombstone,[10] andGreta Lee as the AI assistantLyla.[11] In January 2024,Jake Johnson expressed interest in reprising his role as Peter B. Parker from the prior films and hadpitched ideas for the character's return to Lord.[46] In August, Soni said voice recording would begin in the following months,[7] after the SAG-AFTRA strike had delayed it,[25][26] but it had yet to begin by January 2025.[12] Steinfeld said she had started some recording by April and that they were "well into" that process.[47] Moore and Jerome were recording their lines by August,[48] while Lee said she recorded her lines alongsideAcross the Spider-Verse.[11]
Singerd4vd indicated in April 2024 that he was working on a song for the score ofBeyond the Spider-Verse.[28][29] Daniel Pemberton returned from the first two films to compose the film's score by that June, when he said he was focused on connecting theBeyond the Spider-Verse score with those of the prior films to provide cohesion between them.[35]
Lord, Persichetti, and Thompson debuted the first footage from the film at Sony'sCinemaCon panel at the end of March 2025, which highlighted Miles declaring he would do things "his way" after lamenting about others telling him how his story should play out.[2][5] Rebecca Rubin atVariety noted that the footage appeared to show that Miles would face anexistential crisis in the film.[2] Sony also released five images featuring Miles, Gwen, and the Earth-42 Prowler from the film online, which Kaitlyn Booth ofBleeding Cool felt would "make the long wait a little more bearable". She described the footage as a brief tease of how the film was "once again reshaping and reimagining what it means to animate a film".[3] Germain Lussier atGizmodo compared the footage's various shapes and colors to the visuals from the film2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).[49]
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be theatrically released bySony Pictures Releasing in the United States on June 18, 2027,[43] inIMAX andpremium large formats (PLFs), the first Sony animated film to do so.[18][50] The film was originally scheduled to be released on March 29, 2024,[18] but was removed from Sony's release calendar in July 2023, due to production delays and the SAG-AFTRA strike preventing voice recording work.[25][20] In March 2025,Beyond the Spider-Verse was given a release date of June 4, 2027,[50] but this was pushed back three weeks later to June 25, to accommodate the film'sK–12 target audience and international markets,[42] before moving forward a week for theFather's Day weekend.[43]
In April 2021, Sony signed deals withNetflix andDisney for the rights to their 2022 to 2026 film slate, following the films' theatrical and home media windows.[51][52] Netflix signed for exclusive "pay 1 window" streaming rights, which is typically an 18-month window and included the sequels toSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse; this deal built on an existing output deal that Netflix had signed with Sony Pictures Animation in 2014.[51][53] Disney signed for "pay 2 window" rights for the films, which would be streamed onDisney+ andHulu as well as broadcast on Disney's linear television networks.[52][54]
As of now,True Detective is poised to be just the second TV series of [Nicolas] Cage's career, as he'll soon be seen in the MGM+ seriesSpider-Noir, in which he'll play Spider-Man as a down-on-his-luck private eye in 1930s New York. He'll also reprise his voice role as the character inSpider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is due in 2027.
In all fairness to Sony, they're taking a lot of tender loving care with the nextSpider-Verse animated movie, with no plans for that threequel to hit the 2025 release calendar.
This new agreement builds upon Netflix's pre-existing output deal with Sony Pictures Animation films to now include all SPE film labels and genres.
