Sphumelele Shamase (born 16 January 2002) is a South Africansoccer player who plays as awinger forSAFA Women's League sideUJ Ladies and theSouth Africa women's national team.[1]

Club career

Shamase currently plays for theUJ Ladies F.C.

In 2023, she was the top scorer in the2023 Hollywoodbets Super League finishing with 22 goals.[2]

FC Gintra

[edit]

On 6 May 2024 she joinedA Lyga sideFC Gintra.[3] She made her debut in a 3-1 win overRīgas FS on 8 May 2024.[4] She won theA Lyga title with the team in her first season.

In her first appearance in theUEFA Women's Champions League on 4 September 2024, Shamase scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 victory over Moldovan championsAnenii Noi.[5]

Shamase finished her first season in Europe with 12 league goals in 13 appearances for FC Gintra, with 17 goals in 21 appearances across all competitions.[6]

UJ Ladies

In May 2025, she rejoined SAFA Women's League sideUJ Ladies.[7]

International career

In 2017, she was selected in theBantwana squad for theFIFA U/17 Women's World Cup Qualifiers.[8] Shamase competed forBantwana at the2018 FIFA U/17 Women's World Cup.[9]

In 2022, she competed for theSouth African women's national team at the2022 COSAFA Women's Championship were they finished as runners-up toZambia. Shamase scored 2 goals in the tournament.[10]

In 2023, she was part of the team that was selected for the2023 COSAFA Women's Championship where they existed in the group stages and was also added to the senior national team for the2024 Women's Africa Cup of nations qualifier against Burkina Faso.[11][12]

She has an identical twin sister,Thubelihle Shamase, who also plays soccer.[13]
